Survival game with puzzle and TD elements

Savage Age is an adventure game from HiddenBlade Studio and indienova. This lets you follow a hero in a prehistoric era, tasked with saving his tribe’s holy totem. With its use of retro 2.5D visuals with cartoon-like designs, you get to combine basic survival and RPG elements. Solve puzzles, build your base, and even set up defenses against enemies.

Visually, Savage Age feels like a cross between Diablo II and Prehistorik, with the base-building and survival elements of Valheim and Sons of Valhalla. Although the graphics feel dated by modern standards, it is well-optimized and great for casual gameplay.

Set out on a quest for the holy totem

Savage Age is set in a lost time, where you have the unnamed hero tasked with recovering the holy Three-Winged Totem for his tribe. While the game is largely linear, with 21 levels in the main storyline plus extra content, it somehow feels like an open world. It combines tower defense, puzzle solving, and even base-building elements all in one, letting it cater to a wider player base.

As mentioned, the game features isometric 2.5D visuals similar to games of the early 2000s. Combined with the cartoony art style, it feels like a modern retro that references a past age in video games. Still, its exploration and puzzle-solving are both fun and instinctual, rewarding players who find different ways of solving its challenges. There are a lot of secrets to find as well.

Whether it’s by design or by technical limitations, the game animation feels clunky. Movement is not at a smoother pace like modern games, but it fits right in with the early 2000s vibes. Also, considering that it started as a one-man project, it’s surprisingly well-optimized. It has well-designed levels and a lot of content for hours of replayability. It even has an Endless Mode for a casual survival experience.

An enjoyable adventure title

Savage Age presents a captivating adventure reminiscent of classic gaming eras, blending linear storytelling with elements of open-world exploration. Its isometric visuals and cartoony art style evoke nostalgia while its engaging puzzle-solving and base-building mechanics offer a fresh experience. Despite occasional clunkiness in animation, its well-designed levels and abundant secrets ensure hours of replayability. Overall, whether embracing its retro charm or enjoying its modern twists, this game promises a satisfying journey.
